Note: This photograph taken by Sam Lévin in the 1960s is associated with one of Brigitte Bardot’s most iconic images. Its framing and composition inspired Gilbert Allard in the design of the poster for Jean-Luc Godard’s film *Contempt*, released in 1963 and now considered one of the masterpieces of the French New Wave. At that time, Bardot was at the height of her international fame and embodied a new image of femininity that left a profound mark on cinema, photography, and the graphic arts. A leading portrait photographer in French cinema, Sam Lévin produced numerous photographs throughout his career that have become iconic references in the world of film. Published in the 1990s for press use during Mois de la Photo, this print attests to the exceptional enduring legacy of this image, which has become a symbol of the cinematic and advertising aesthetics of the 1960s.
