JOHNNY WEISMULLER - Lot 203
JOHNNY WEISMULLER And Cheeta the monkey… during the MGM filming of an unidentified Tarzan movie, 1930s. Photograph, vintage silver print, stamped and annotated on the back. 20.5 x 26 cm, including white borders. Note: This 1930s photograph depicts Johnny Weissmuller with Cheeta during the filming of a *Tarzan* movie produced by MGM. A former Olympic swimming champion, Weissmuller rose to worldwide fame by portraying Tarzan on screen, becoming for several generations the most iconic interpreter of the character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. His partnership with Cheeta, Tarzan’s famous chimpanzee companion in the film adaptations, contributed greatly to the series’ popular success. Produced during Hollywood’s Golden Age, MGM’s *Tarzan* films rank among the great exotic adventures of 1930s and 1940s cinema. This vintage print thus serves as a valuable glimpse behind the scenes of a production that has become legendary and of one of the most iconic figures in American adventure cinema. Signs of handling on some of the white edges. Note:
