THE FOIRE DU TRÔNE DURING THE OCCUPATION - Lot 240
THE FOIRE DU TRÔNE DURING THE OCCUPATION Carousel featuring Walt Disney characters (Minnie and Mickey), 1941. Photograph, vintage silver print, captioned (label) and stamped (including the German Censorship mark and a date). 17.5 x 11.8 cm. Note: This photograph, taken in 1941, shows a carousel at the Foire du Trône decorated with figures of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, iconic characters created by Walt Disney. Taken during the German Occupation, the image is of particular historical interest as it illustrates the persistence of references to American popular culture in everyday French life despite the context of war. The presence of German censorship stamps on the reverse is direct evidence of the control exercised over the dissemination of images during this period. As France’s largest funfair, the Foire du Trône was then a major venue for popular entertainment, offering Parisians an escape from their particularly difficult circumstances. This vintage print thus serves as a valuable record at the intersection of the history of carnival entertainment, 20th-century visual culture, and life in France during the Occupation. Note:
