PADAUNG WOMEN - Lot 264
PADAUNG WOMEN "Giraffe" women from Burma, in London… 1935. Photograph, vintage silver print, captioned (dated label), stamped (including date), and annotated on the back. 23 x 17.7 cm, including white borders. Note: This photograph, taken in 1935, depicts Padaung women—now generally referred to as members of the Kayan group—photographed in London during a public exhibition. Native to the mountainous regions between Burma (Myanmar) and present-day Thailand, some Kayan women are known for their traditional practice of wearing stacked metal neck rings, a custom that has greatly contributed to their international fame. During the first half of the 20th century, these depictions were part of ethnographic exhibitions and events designed to introduce the European public to cultures then considered distant or exotic. Beyond its documentary value, this image reflects the way Western societies viewed non-European populations at that time. As a vintage print, it is a valuable document at the intersection of the history of photography, visual anthropology, and 20th-century international cultural exchanges. There are marks on the paper at certain corners and along the edges. Note:
