MARCEL CERDAN - Lot 265
MARCEL CERDAN Boxer… 1950s. 3 photos (including a photomontage with Ray Sugar Robinson), vintage silver gelatin prints, stamped on two of the backs (including one by photographer Henri Grégoire) and annotated on one. Some dust here and there, one broken corner, pin holes (in the corners of a single photo), and one torn edge. Note: This set of three photographs from the 1950s is dedicated to Marcel Cerdan, a legendary figure in French and international boxing. Middleweight world champion in 1948, Cerdan remains one of the most admired athletes of the 20th century, both for his athletic prowess and his tragic fate. Among the images is a photomontage placing him alongside Ray “Sugar” Robinson, considered one of the greatest boxers of all time. Their 1949 bout at Yankee Stadium in New York is one of the most famous fights in boxing history, pitting two champions at the peak of their careers against each other. Marcel Cerdan’s fame was also amplified by his relationship with Édith Piaf, which helped turn him into a true cultural icon. These vintage prints thus serve as precious testaments to the golden age of professional boxing and the exceptional career of an athlete who has become a legend.
