WILLIAM BURROUGH - Lot 295
WILLIAM BURROUGH On the balcony, flanked by Jean-Louis Barrault and director Conrad Rooks, during the filming of one of the Beat Generation’s iconic films, *Chappaqua* (photographer Robert Franck served as the cinematographer), 1966. Photograph, vintage silver gelatin print, unmarked on the reverse. 28.5 x 20.2 cm. Upper edge has been handled. Note: This photograph, taken in 1966, shows William S. Burroughs flanked by Jean-Louis Barrault and director Conrad Rooks during the filming of *Chappaqua*, a film that became one of the Beat Generation’s most iconic works. Directed by Conrad Rooks and released that same year, *Chappaqua* is a largely autobiographical narrative exploring the themes of addiction, spiritual quest, and counterculture—central to the artistic concerns of writers and artists associated with the Beat movement. The film brings together several major figures from this world, including William S. Burroughs, author of *Naked Lunch*, as well as numerous representatives of the international artistic avant-garde. Jean-Louis Barrault’s presence also underscores the connections between the European cultural scene and the American experimental circles of the time. Photographer Robert Frank’s participation as a cinematographer further reinforces the historical and artistic significance of this production. This original silver-gelatin print thus serves as a valuable testament to one of the most unique encounters between experimental cinema, literature, and the counterculture of the 1960s.
