Necklace composed of five rows of heishi shell beads adorned - Lot 323
Necklace composed of five rows of heishi shell beads adorned with numerous stylized birds carved from mother-of-pearl. Clasp and cones in 800-thousandths silver. Made in the Southwestern United States, likely of the Zuni or Kewa tradition (Santo Domingo). 20th-century piece. Minor, slight chips Gross weight: 73.6 gr Note: So-called “Fetish Necklaces” are one of the iconic creations of the Pueblo peoples of the American Southwest. They traditionally combine heishi shell beads, made using an ancestral technique, with carved animal figures. In Zuni culture, animals carry strong symbolic and spiritual significance. Mother-of-pearl is among the materials traditionally used for these carvings. Our piece stands out for its extensive decoration of mother-of-pearl birds arranged in several rows and for its documented provenance from a gallery specializing in Native American art. An original invoice from the Four Winds Gallery dated 2006 is included.
