ALDOS SOARES (1961)
Campings
Digital print
24 x 30 cm
Note: A photograph by Aldos Soares (born in 1961), this image from the Campings series shows a large group of vacationers gathered inside an open tent, as if for an impromptu family portrait in the heart of the campground. The composition is highly constructed: the tent forms an almost theatrical triangular frame that focuses all eyes and all the people present within a single space, bringing together adults and teenagers, tanned bodies, swimsuits, relaxed poses, and smiles directed at the photographer. All around, we glimpse the everyday scenery of the campground—laundry hanging out to dry, RVs, cars, trees—which anchors the scene in a world of working-class vacations, at once simple, familiar, and deeply communal.
What gives the image its power is precisely this tension between apparent spontaneity and the group’s highly precise organization. Here, Soares transforms a scene of summer socializing into a true community portrait. The tent becomes almost a small stage or a symbolic shelter, a temporary space where a kind of vacation tribe is formed. Everyone finds their place in the image, and the whole scene reveals what is most characteristic of camping: joyful togetherness, a mix of generations, conviviality, shared rituals, and the making of memories. As in the rest of the series, Aldos Soares does not seek out picturesque anecdotes but rather a tender and sometimes slightly ironic observation of vacationers’ behaviors. Through its direct composition, the warm late-afternoon light, and a penchant for staged group shots, this photograph portrays the campground not only as a place of leisure but also as a social setting where family and friendship bonds—and the ways people live together during their vacations—are laid bare.
