LOUIS MALLE - Lot 1
LOUIS MALLE Behind the camera during the filming of "Zazie in the Metro," based on the novel by Raymond Queneau, 1960. Photo by Willy Bern, vintage silver print, stamped (including the photographer’s stamp) and annotated on the back. 25 x 15.4 cm. Condition: slight dust at the bottom of the print. Note: After “Elevator to the Gallows” and “The Lovers,” Louis Malle, at age 27, took on Queneau’s novel, which was reputed to be unadaptable. He turned it into a burlesque and virtuosic comedy, featuring time-lapse shots, continuity errors, and Tex Avery-style gags, carried by the young Catherine Demongeot and Philippe Noiret. A rare image of the filmmaker at work on a set that foreshadowed the boldness of the French New Wave.
