PIERRE SOULAGES - Lot 349
PIERRE SOULAGES
The Painter of Black and Outrenoir, 1979. Photograph, original RC print, annotated (with the date) on the back. 17.7 x 24 cm, including white borders. Small spot (above the shoulder).
Note: This photograph of Pierre Soulages, taken in 1979, attests to the recognition already achieved by the artist who would go on to become one of the leading figures in international abstract art. Since the late 1940s, the artist has been developing a body of work based on the expressive power of black, a color he explores as a vehicle for light and space. A few years after this photograph was taken, he would formulate the concept of “outrenoir”—a term that has become inseparable from his work, referring to a pictorial space where light emerges from the reflection on the black surface itself. This portrait thus serves as a valuable record of a pivotal period in Soulages’ career, as his work was gradually establishing itself as one of the most significant contributions to 20th-century contemporary painting.
