JOSETTE DAY AND JEAN MARAIS - Lot 7
JOSETTE DAY AND JEAN MARAIS In costumes designed by Christian Bérard for Jean Cocteau's film "Beauty and the Beast," 1946. Photo by G.R. Aldo, vintage silver gelatin print on card stock; credits (including the photographer) below the image. 26.6 x 21 cm including margins. A few foxing spots (dots) in one corner. Note: Directed by Jean Cocteau in 1946 and based on the fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, *Beauty and the Beast* stars Josette Day as Belle and Jean Marais as Avenant, the Beast, and the Prince. Through its enchanting sets designed by Christian Bérard, Henri Alekan’s lighting, and its handcrafted special effects, Cocteau transforms the fairy tale into a poetic world inspired by fantasy, surrealism, and the engravings of Gustave Doré. Beneath the Beast’s imposing makeup, Jean Marais delivers one of his most famous performances opposite Josette Day, whose radiant presence embodies Belle’s purity. This photograph was taken by G. R. Aldo, the on-set photographer officially credited in the film’s opening credits.
