ROLAND LESAFFRE AND RAF VALLONE - Lot 13
ROLAND LESAFFRE AND RAF VALLONE Scene from Marcel Carné’s film “Thérèse Raquin,” based on the novel by Émile Zola, 1953. Photograph, silver print on vintage cardstock, title in the image, annotated on the back. 2 9.8 x 24 cm, including margins. Note: Directed by Marcel Carné in 1953, “Thérèse Raquin” transposes Émile Zola’s 1867 novel to 1950s Lyon. Raf Vallone plays Laurent, an Italian truck driver who becomes the lover of Thérèse, portrayed by Simone Signoret. After the death of Camille, Thérèse’s husband, the two lovers are threatened by Riton, a young blackmailing sailor played by Roland Lesaffre, who unwittingly witnessed the tragedy that unfolded on a train. Absent from Zola’s novel, this character was created for the film to give concrete form to the threat and guilt that haunt the couple. This scene thus brings together Laurent and the man whose blackmail precipitates the story’s tragic conclusion. The film won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1953.
