ORSON WELLES AND ANTHONY PERKINS - Lot 73
ORSON WELLES AND ANTHONY PERKINS During the filming of *The Trial*, 1962. Photo by Nicolas Tikhomiroff, silver gelatin print on vintage card stock, annotated (photographer’s name) and stamped (numbers on the back). 19.8 x 33.5 cm. Note: Brought together during the filming of *The Trial* in 1962, based on the novel by Franz Kafka, Orson Welles and Anthony Perkins also occupy opposing roles in the story. Perkins plays Joseph K., an employee suddenly accused of a crime whose nature will never be revealed to him. Welles, who served as director, screenwriter, and actor, plays Albert Hastler, the lawyer to whom Joseph K. turns, yet is unable to escape the absurd judicial machine. Buoyed by the success of *Psycho*, Anthony Perkins lends his fragile nervousness to this antihero trapped in a bureaucratic and nightmarish world. Filmed in part at the former Orsay train station, the film features monumental and oppressive architecture that embodies Kafkaesque anxiety.
