SYLVANA MANGANO AND DORIS DOWLING - Lot 74
SYLVANA MANGANO AND DORIS DOWLING During the filming of Giuseppe De Santis’s movie “Riso amaro” (Bitter Rice), 1949. Photograph, period silver print, stamped and annotated on the back. 13.5 x 18.8 cm, including white margins. Signs of handling (some visible only against the light), particularly small ink dots on a white margin. Note: In *Riso amaro* (Bitter Rice), directed by Giuseppe De Santis in 1949, Silvana Mangano and Doris Dowling portray two women whose fates are intertwined in the rice paddies of the Po Valley. Dowling plays Francesca, the accomplice of a small-time crook played by Vittorio Gassman, who blends in with the seasonal farmworkers to escape the police. There she meets Silvana, a young rice-paddy worker fascinated by appearances and dreams of a better life. Blending social commentary, crime melodrama, and sensuality, the film depicts the grueling working conditions of these farmworkers. A landmark work of Italian neorealism, enriched with elements borrowed from film noir, *Bitter Rice* brought Silvana Mangano international recognition and was screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1949.
