VIVIEN LEIGH AND CLARK GABLE - Lot 185
VIVIEN LEIGH AND CLARK GABLE An iconic image from Victor Fleming’s film *Gone with the Wind* (1939). Photograph, later silver print (1950s), unmarked on the reverse. 20.3 x 25.6 cm, including white borders. A thumbtack hole in each white corner. Note: Vivien Leigh plays Scarlett O’Hara, a strong-willed and passionate heroine, while Clark Gable portrays Rhett Butler, a cynical adventurer captivated by her spirit. Their tumultuous relationship serves as the central thread of this epic adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel: their thwarted romance unfolds against the backdrop of the Civil War and the demise of the Old South. Produced by David O. Selznick and officially directed by Victor Fleming, the film combines romantic melodrama with a historical spectacle in Technicolor. Vivien Leigh won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Scarlett. The film, however, remains controversial today for its idealized portrayal of the slave-holding South.
