JEANNE MOREAU AND LUIS BUÑUEL - Lot 196
JEANNE MOREAU AND LUIS BUÑUEL During the filming of *The Diary of a Chambermaid*, 1964. Photograph, original silver print, stamped and annotated on the back. 18.2 x 23.8 cm. Note: Luis Buñuel chose Jeanne Moreau to play Célestine, an elegant Parisian maid hired in a bourgeois provincial household in the late 1920s. A keen observer, she uncovers the sexual frustrations, hypocrisy, and power dynamics that shape the household. Her attention is drawn in particular to Joseph, a servant with nationalist and anti-Semitic beliefs, whom she suspects of murdering a child. Adapted from the novel by Octave Mirbeau, the film allows Buñuel to paint a satirical portrait of the bourgeoisie, the clergy, and the far right. It also marks the beginning of his long collaboration with screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière. Buñuel had taken notice of Jeanne Moreau’s performance in *Elevator to the Gallows*.
