JOE DALLESSANDRO AND GERALDINE SMITH - I - Lot 215
JOE DALLESSANDRO AND GERALDINE SMITH - I During the filming of Paul Morrissey’s movie “Flesh,” produced by Andy Warhol, 1968. Photograph, vintage color print, label in one corner of the image, blank back. 30.3 x 23.8 cm. Note: Joe Dallesandro plays Joe, a young New York male prostitute tasked with raising the money needed for his girlfriend Geri’s abortion; Geri is played by Geraldine Smith. Over the course of a day, he encounters various clients and characters from Manhattan’s underground scene. Shot on a shoestring budget and largely based on the actors’ improvisation, *Flesh* adopts a deliberately loose style, akin to cinéma vérité. Produced under the auspices of Andy Warhol, the film helped establish Dallesandro as a figure of the counterculture and marked the beginning of Paul Morrissey’s informal trilogy, which continued with *Trash* and *Heat*. Like Dallesandro, Geraldine Smith belonged to the Factory’s circle of “superstars.” Note:
