BERNARD VERLEY AND ZOUZOU - Lot 239
BERNARD VERLEY AND ZOUZOU Scene from Eric Rohmer’s film *Love in the Afternoon*, 1972. Photograph, vintage silver print, annotated on the back. 17.2 x 23 cm. Note: Bernard Verley plays Frédéric, a married Parisian executive who is about to become a father for the second time. Though satisfied with his married life, he nevertheless enjoys observing and fantasizing about the women he encounters. The arrival of Chloé, a free-spirited and provocative former acquaintance played by Zouzou, turns his daydreams into a real temptation. She regularly visits him at his office and becomes his confidante during his afternoons, eventually proposing a relationship that would threaten his marriage. The sixth and final installment of the *Contes moraux* series, the film contrasts imagined desire with acting on it and observes, with Éric Rohmer’s characteristic precision, the reasoning through which Frédéric attempts to preserve his self-image.
