MACHA MERIL AND BERNARD NOËL - Lot 18
MACHA MERIL AND BERNARD NOËL
Scene from Jean-Luc Godard’s film *Une femme mariée*, 1964.
Photograph, vintage silver print,
annotated on the back.
18.2 x 23.8 cm.
Note: In *Une femme mariée*, directed by Jean-Luc Godard in 1964, Macha Méril plays Charlotte, a young pregnant woman torn between her husband Pierre, played by Philippe Leroy, and her lover Robert, played by Bernard Noël. Through this love triangle, Godard paints a fragmented portrait of a woman whose body, feelings, and choices are constantly subject to the male gaze and to the images conveyed by advertising and women’s magazines. Shot quickly during the summer of 1964, the film stands out for Raoul Coutard’s minimalist cinematography and its discontinuous editing. Its depiction of sexuality, contraception, and adultery prompted intervention by French censors.
