RAQUEL WELCH AND JIM BROWN - Lot 63
RAQUEL WELCH AND JIM BROWN During the filming of Tom Gries's movie "100 Rifles," 1969. Photo by Terry O'Neill, vintage silver gelatin print, captioned (label with photographer's credit), stamped, and annotated on the back. 25.2 x 17.4 cm. Some signs of handling visible only when held up to the light. Paper is warped. Note: Directed by Tom Gries in 1969, *Les 100 Fusils* is a Western set in Mexico during the Yaqui Rebellion. Jim Brown plays Lyedecker, a sheriff sent to arrest a bank robber played by Burt Reynolds, but who eventually joins the insurrection against General Verdugo’s troops. Raquel Welch plays Sarita, a determined figure in the resistance, with whom Lyedecker becomes involved romantically. Their on-screen relationship drew particular attention at a time when interracial couples were still very rarely portrayed in major Hollywood productions. Filmed in Spain, the movie also helped transform Raquel Welch’s image by offering her a committed action role. This set photograph was taken by Terry O’Neill, famous for his portraits of major figures in cinema and popular culture of the 1960s.
