AGNES VARDA AND JACQUES DEMY - Lot 86
AGNES VARDA AND JACQUES DEMY At the Cannes Film Festival, 1965. Photo by Pierre Manciet, vintage silver print, stamped by the photographer and captioned on the back. 18 x 12.8 cm. Note: At the time, Agnès Varda and Jacques Demy were one of the most iconic couples in French cinema, each developing their own highly personal artistic worlds. Photographed at the Cannes Film Festival in 1965, they were each at a pivotal point in their careers: Demy had just won the 1964 Palme d’Or for *The Umbrellas of Cherbourg*, while Varda was directing *Le Bonheur*, released in 1965. This appearance at Cannes thus brought together two major figures of the New Wave, embodying Varda’s formal inventiveness and Demy’s musical and romantic cinema.
