Multiple originals by Jean Fautrier

For those who do not yet know Jean Fautrier, this artist is considered, along with Jean Dubuffet, as one of the most representative painters of informal art in France, with his full development in the post-war period from 1945 to 1960. However, he always chose to stay away from the official art scene during his lifetime.

Informal art brings together both the current of lyrical abstraction with its techniques of expression essentially gestural, the matiérisme are the object is to work the materials on the surfaces of the canvas, and by approximation, the spatialism whose research focuses on the dimensions of space and time and on light.
Other currents, such as the CoBrA movement, the Gutai Group, Abstract Expressionism in Germany, Jackson Pollock's Action Painting in the United States can also be related to this pictorial movement of the end of the 20th century.

A multiple original, what is its specificity?

Jean Fautrier had initially planned the realization of 300 multiple originals. Jeannine Aeply, the painter's companion, did everything, lithograph prints, gouache stamps, and ink, except for the knife painting done in series by a fine arts student. The painter then sorted and signed and kept those that were in his mind from his painting. He only established not a model but the system: 3 prints lithographs and stencils, ink and knife painting. He did not put his hand to it. That was his goal: multiple original that could be made by anyone, but designed by him, library: Rainer Michaël Mason, "Jean Fautrier, les estampes. Nouvel Essai de catalog raisonné ", 1986, cabinet des estampes, Geneva, Switzerland, number OM 2, reproduced on page 157.
