Agathon Leonard, auctioned

Born in Lille, Agathon Léonard began his artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in his home town, then went down to Paris to continue them at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
Agathon Léonard settles permanently in Paris and becomes a naturalized French citizen. The artist exhibits for the first time at the Salon in 1868. He enters the society of French artists and then the National Society of Fine Arts in 1897.

A sculpture made a great impression: "Dancer in a scarf".
At the same time, Agathon Léonard worked in marble, quartz and ivory. His works represent essentially female figures.

Dressed in a dress with extremely fine pleats, transparent and with very flared sleeves, "The Dancer in the Scarf" illustrates particularly the refinement of her work.

This impression of lightness in the treatment of the drapes is present in many of her works. This is notably the case of the "Danseuse au cothurne" presented at this sale.

The complete series of eight bronze dancers, mostly table dances, "The Dance" was offered to the Empress of Russia by
the President of the French Republic during his visit to the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900.
