Nicolas de Staël, an exhibition in Brioude

From 1945 to 1955, in ten years that were carried out with a great deal of energy and that summarize the totality of his work, Nicolas de Staël embarked on a pictorial path that was constantly renewed. In a dazzling progression, each step of which is felt decisively, in this time of renewed peace, Staël offers painting immense hope. In his relentless work, intuition is always accompanied by doubt and urgency. Jean-Louis Prat is the curator of the exhibition.
Nicolas de Staël is one of those extremely prolific painters who lived for their art in a devouring creative ardor. From 1940 to 1955, the Russian-born painter painted more than a thousand canvases, destroying some of them as he went along.
At the Doyenné, a modern and contemporary art space in Brioude (Haute-Loire), about fifty works are exhibited to tell the story of ten years of production. Some of them come from the Centre Pompidou Beaubourg but also from numerous private collections.
The public will also be able to discover nine paintings on paper never before exhibited, preliminary studies carried out by Nicolas de Staël prior to his famous painting Parc des Princes (a painting that was sold for 20 million euros in 2019 at a Christie's auction, a record for the artist). This painting is exhibited in Brioude as well as the letter he wrote to his friend René Char after having seen a match in the famous sports arena
