Mikhail Chemiakin

Mihaïl Chemiakin was born in Moscow in 1943. Chemiakin developed an interest in art at an early age. His military father was appointed as a commander in various cities in East Germany. The Chemiakin family moved there in 1945. After returning to the USSR, he entered the Repin Art Academy in Leningrad in 1957. In 1971, he received a gold medal in Venice for the illustration of a book "The Spanish Classical Epigrams". In 1971, he immigrated to Paris and finally to New York to settle down. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the European Academy of Arts, France in 1987. In 1991, he traveled to Afghanistan to negotiate the release of Russian prisoners of war.
