Estimation et cote des sculptures de Sandoz

Who is Sandoz?

Sandoz was born in Basel in 1881. From 1900 to 1903, he attended the School of Decorative Arts in Geneva, then left for Paris in 1904. There he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where his teacher was the sculptor and painter Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié.

At the beginning of his career, Sandoz's style was influenced by cubism, but he quickly abandoned it in favor of a more naturalistic representation.

A figurative and animal sculptor, his favorite materials are bronze, various stones such as marble, semi-precious stones and ceramics.

He does not only focus on sculpture but also on painting.

He created various objects including lamps, paper trays, bookends, paperweights and radiator caps for cars.

In the 1920s, he developed a light projection process for theater sets.

An innovative artist, Édouard-Marcel Sandoz was one of the first sculptors to use colored stones in his works, which caused controversy because they did not correspond to the "rules of art" of the time.

In 1933, he founded the French society of animal artists.

Sandoz collaborated on several occasions with the Swiss architect Jean Tschumi for, among other things, the Nestlé pavilion at the 1937 Paris World's Fair and for the construction of the Sandoz laboratories in Orléans.

He is particularly known for his animal sculptures, for which he draws his inspiration from living animals.

In 1947, Édouard-Marcel Sandoz was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris and in 1959 he received an honorary doctorate in natural sciences from the University of Lausanne for his research on animals.

He spent most of his life in Paris, but often returned to Switzerland.

He died in Lausanne in 1971.

But back to our original point, what is Marcel Sandoz's auction value?

If his paintings are not very sought after, the prices still oscillate around 800 to 2,000 euros.

However, it is Sandoz's animal sculptures that command the highest prices.
Let us take a few examples of the artist's recurring themes:

The Seated Cat, large model (42 cm) fetches between €40,000 and €60,000; the small model: €4,000 / 5,000.

The Seated Fennec exists in several sizes: the estimate for the large one (30cm) is € 20,000 / 30,000; the small one: € 5,000 / 7,000.

Last example: the estimate of the Rabbit jewel (6cm) is: 2.000 / 2.500 € while that of the Rabbit head turned - rarer sculpture - is 5.000 / 6.000 €.

Note that the large sculptures for the artist (60-70 cm) are close to 200.000 €.

All these prices apply to bronzes.

However, Edouard-Marcel Sandoz also produced ceramic pieces, either sculptures (quite rare), or objects such as the Duck Pitcher or the Fennec Candy Jar, which fetch between 200 € and 500 €.
