Fernando Amorsolo, a Filipino painter, is considered one of the most important artists in the history of Philippine art. He was known for his depictions of the Philippine landscape, its people and their customs, as well as for his portraits of women. Amorsolo was renowned for his exceptional technique and mastery of light. He began his artistic training at the age of thirteen under the tutelage of his uncle, the painter Fabián de la Rosa, who became his guide and protector throughout his career.

Two paintings that bear witness to a tormented period during the Japanese occupation, during which the inhabitants retained the hope and joie de vivre so described by Fernando Amorsolo.
