YOUGOSLAVIA, Queen (Natalija Kesko), King (Milan Obrenovic) - Lot 286
YOUGOSLAVIA, Queen (Natalija Kesko), King (Milan Obrenovic) and son (Alexandre) Costume studies of Serbian village girls, 1880s 5 albumen prints mounted on cardboard (cabinet card format) by B. Danilovic, photographer's credits (in Belgrade) under the images and on the backs of the cardboard. Note: Set of five albumen photographs dating from the 1880s, depicting members of the Serbian royal family - Queen Natalija Keško (1859-1941), King Milan I Obrenović (1854-1901) and their son Alexander Obrenović (1876-1903) - as well as traditional costume studies of Serbian village women. King Milan I ruled Serbia from 1868 to 1889, proclaiming the kingdom in 1882, while Queen Natalija, of Moldavian and Russian descent, played an important role in the country's public and political life. Their son Alexander became King of Serbia in 1889. These photographs are the work of photographer B. Danilović, active in Belgrade, and are presented in the form of albumin prints mounted on cardboard in "cabinet card" format, a process and format widely used in portrait and documentary photography at the end of the XIXᵉ century. They reflect both the official iconography of the Serbian monarchy and the ethnographic interest in the region's traditional costumes at the time.
