JAPAN - MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912) - Lot 184
JAPAN - MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912) Pair of large Satsuma porcelain vases, with polychrome decoration and gold highlights. Baluster-shaped with flared necks and handles featuring shishi chimeras. The rich decoration depicts an assembly of rakan (Buddhist disciples) surrounding a central figure, with a dragon moving among clouds. The background is entirely decorated with white enamel dots and stylized motifs, in the taste of late XIXᵉ century export productions. The base features the crackled cream paste characteristic of satsuma. Below the base, a cartouche in Japanese characters on a red background, surmounted by the mon (emblem) of the Shimazu clan - a circle crossed by a cross - a symbol frequently used on satsuma ceramics. The characters seem to correspond to a Satsuma export workshop active around 1890-1915. Height: 37 cm Condition: good
