THE EMPIRE OF THE SENSES - Lot 146
THE EMPIRE OF THE SENSES Eiko Matsuda and Tatsuya Fuji in Nagisa Oshima's film, 1976. 2 photos, vintage silver prints, stamped and annotated on one back. 12.8 x 17.8 cm each. Note: Set of two photographs depicting Eiko Matsuda and Tatsuya Fuji in The Empire of the Senses, a film directed by Nagisa Ōshima and released in 1976. Inspired by a crime that took place in Japan in the 1930s, this film, now famous for its explicit eroticism, is one of the major works of international auteur cinema of the 1970s. Nagisa Ōshima, a key figure in the Japanese New Wave, develops a radical reflection on desire, power and transgression. Presented at the Cannes Film Festival, the film provoked considerable controversy on its release, while acquiring cult status in the history of world cinema. Period promotional photographs of the film remain particularly sought-after by collectors of auteur and Asian cinema.
