MICHEL TOURNIER - Lot 272
MICHEL TOURNIER writer and photographer, 1970. Photograph, vintage silver print, captioned (dated), stamped, and annotated on the back. 20 x 30 cm. Note: This photograph, taken in 1970, depicts Michel Tournier at the beginning of one of the most influential literary careers of the second half of the 20th century. A major French writer, he had just achieved considerable success with *Friday, or, The Limbo of the Pacific* (1967), a work that reimagined the myth of Robinson Crusoe and earned him the Grand Prix du roman from the Académie française. A few years later, he would win the Prix Goncourt for *The Erl-King* (1970). Although less well-known to the general public, his work as a photographer nevertheless played an important role in his reflections on the image, the gaze, and representation—recurring themes in his literary work. This photograph thus bears witness to an intellectual figure whose creative output extended far beyond the realm of writing alone. A vintage print, captioned and dated, it is a fascinating document dedicated to one of the great contemporary French writers.
