GRETA GARBO AND JOHN GILBERT - Lot 11
GRETA GARBO AND JOHN GILBERT During the filming of Rouben Mamoulian’s movie “Queen Christina” (La Reine Christine), 1933. Photo, vintage silver print, unmarked on the back. 20.3 x 25.8 cm. Note: Directed by Rouben Mamoulian in 1933, *Queen Christina* gave Greta Garbo one of her most iconic roles. She portrays the Queen of Sweden, torn between her royal duties and her love for Antonio, the Spanish ambassador played by John Gilbert. The film is a very loose adaptation of the life of Christina of Sweden and portrays her abdication as the climax of a great romantic tragedy. Above all, this production marks the on-screen reunion of Garbo and Gilbert—a legendary couple from the silent film era—in their seventh and final film together. Their past relationship lends a special poignancy to their love scenes, even as Gilbert’s career was in decline with the advent of sound films. This photograph, taken during filming, captures their final cinematic collaboration.
