BJÖRN ANDRESEN AND DIRK BOGARDE - I - Lot 227
BJÖRN ANDRESEN AND DIRK BOGARDE - I Fascination… a scene from Luchino Visconti’s film “Morte a Venezia” (Death in Venice), 1971. Photograph, vintage silver print, production stamp on the back. 16.2 x 23.8 cm. Some signs of handling. Note: Dirk Bogarde plays Gustav von Aschenbach, an aging composer who has come to stay at the Lido in Venice to recuperate. There he encounters Tadzio, a Polish teenager played by Björn Andrésen, whose beauty becomes a silent—and soon obsessive—fascination for him. The two characters exchange almost no words: Visconti builds their relationship through glances, while a cholera epidemic secretly sweeps through the city. Adapted from Thomas Mann’s novella, the film reflects on ideal beauty, desire, aging, and death, set notably to the rhythm of Gustav Mahler’s “Adagietto.” *Death in Venice* received the 25th Anniversary Prize at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival.
