MICHEL SIMON AND JANIE MARESE - Lot 231
MICHEL SIMON AND JANIE MARESE Scene from Jean Renoir’s film *La Chienne*, based on the novel by G. de la Fouchardière, 1931. Photograph, silver print on vintage card stock, stamped and annotated on the back. 28.3 x 22.2 cm. Note: Michel Simon plays Maurice Legrand, a humble cashier, amateur painter, and unhappy husband who falls in love with Lulu, a young prostitute played by Janie Marèse. Blinded by his feelings, he fails to realize that she and her pimp, Dédé, are exploiting his gullibility and selling his paintings under a false name. This love triangle gradually leads Legrand to ruin and crime. Jean Renoir’s second talkie, *La Chienne*, combines social observation, Parisian realism, and remarkable work with direct sound. The film is adapted from the novel by Georges de La Fouchardière. Janie Marèse died in an accident at the age of twenty-three, shortly before the film’s release.
